Ever heard of Roseto Pennsylvania?
The fountain of youth was discovered there.
It was a town comprised almost exclusively of immigrants from the same area in Italy. They had a tremendous sense of community.
Roseto is famous because from 1935-1965 they had a mortality and heart attack rate that was half the national average.
Researchers from the American Medical Association spent five years studying the community to figure out the secret to their longevity.
The rate of heart disease in the neighboring towns was significantly higher. It wasn’t “something in the water”, what they drank or the food they ate. Rosettans drank a lot of wine and smoked cigars. Their diets were high risk as they had a traditional diet of Italian foods like sausage fried in lard, breads and pasta. Rosettans were an overweight people yet their longevity was off the charts.
What the researchers found was almost all of the homes in Roseto had one thing in common.
They contained multi-generational families and they all had front porches. As neighbors walked down the street they were invited onto the front porch to have a drink and a conversation.
They got their nourishment from their relationships with each other.
An interesting thing began to happen years later. As the next generation of Rosettans become more “Americanized” and drifted away from their family values of interdependence and sense of community, their mortality rate shot up and became just as bad as their neighboring towns.
