JJ Watt, defensive end for the Houston Texans gets to the stadium early on game day and sometimes sits by himself in the upper deck of the stadium. He does it to walk a mile in the fan’s shoes and get their perspective of his job. Watt isn’t just a professional athlete, he’s also a leader.
On the heels of yet another senseless tragedy in Baton Rouge our country needs it’s citizens to walk a mile in their neighbor’s shoes.
If you read my post last week you know I was moved to action by the senseless killings of police officers in Dallas. Today I want to share with you exactly the action I’ll be taking. But first, 3 quick questions…
1. Do your spouse and kids worry when you leave for work each morning, wondering if you’ll make it home safely that night? (The children and spouses of our nation’s police officers do every day.)
2. Did you know 1,439 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty over the past 10 years? (That’s an average of one death every 61 hours.)
3. Have you ever walked a mile in a police officer’s shoes?
This is your chance to join me in honoring our police officers and show appreciation for the sacrifices they and their families make. I’m not just going to walk a mile in a police officer’s shoes. Wearing blue from head to toe, I’m actually going to walk 50 miles in a pair of their 8″ tactical boots. On Sept 10, 2016 at the State Police Barracks in Gray Maine I’ll begin a 50-mile walk of gratitude that will lead me to State Police Headquarters in Augusta. My walk of gratitude will culminate on September 11, 2016.
I’d like you to do one of two things: join me for all or part of the journey or be a “virtual walker” and donate to Concerns Of Police Survivors.
My Inaugural Blue Ribbon Walk is benefiting C.O.P.S., a national 501c3 non-profit and is an outward gesture of support for law enforcement officers all over the country. It’s also a fun, inspiring way to raise funds that support the families of fallen officers through C.O.P.S. programs such as peer support, counseling reimbursement and other resources to help families rebuild their shattered lives.
I hope you’ll join me for the Blue Ribbon Walk. You can learn more HERE and join our fundraising team. Thank you for your support.
