When you wake up in the morning, which do you hope for: To have a blessed day or to be a blessing to other people? The story I’m about to share with you is one about the power of the human spirit and a child being a blessing to others. It forever changed my perspective and I hope it does the same for you.
In 2004, when I lived in North Carolina I heard the story of a young girl in Charlotte named Hope Stout. Hope was 12 years old when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. She was offered a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Charlotte. When Hope found out that there were 155 kids on the waiting list ahead of her, she wished for them to have their wishes granted first. The foundation informed her that the funds weren’t available to do this so she changed her wish. She decided that her wish was to be on the board of Make-A-Wish Charlotte. Her reason… so she could raise the money to make the other children’s wishes come true. Hope raised $1.2 million dollars in 30 days allowing all 155 children to have their wishes granted.
Hope’s wish was a simple one, to make other people happy.
And it is something we all can do in our own way each day. Hope’s vision inspired me to be a blessing so I’ve partnered with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to provide any child whose wish it is to be a radio personality with the opportunity to do so on my show. As part of their wish the children and their families will receive transportation to the studio broadcasting apparel and equipment and will have the opportunity to be the host of my show and interview any guests they want. It is one small way I can use my role to make a difference.
Hope’s courage in the face of adversity and her extraordinary vision of being a blessing have left an incredible legacy. One person, no matter how small can make a huge difference. Ask yourself this question each morning when your feet hit the floor:
How can I be a blessing to others and leave a legacy today?
